Mary Ann from Brookfield

Mary Ann From Brookfield

I was born in 1935 in the small town of Le Roy, Wisconsin, a settlement of 100 persons, most of whom were of Bavarian descent. Our Catholic Church and grade school dominated the community. Four nuns of the Racine Dominican Order served the four classrooms of St. Andrew Grade School.

Each classroom had a tabletop radio tuned to public radio. From that source we learned songs, explored nature with Ranger Mac, and – I do recall – learned skills in artwork. I’m certain many Wisconsinites have benefitted throughout their lives from the early learning experiences from public radio.

Thank you, Wisconsin Public Radio!
